The Enneagram

The Enneagram is a tool for personal transformation. It is based on spiritual and psychological concepts of growth, responses, and ways of being. There are tests, some available for free on the internet and some which cost money, which can give you an idea of your Enneagram type.  Most users suggest holding your type lightly, even saying "I lead with the Enneagram 4," instead of saying "I AM a Four."

Working with the Enneagram alone or with some mindsets can be bleak.  When I first found my "type," I thought "Oh what a horrible person!" It was sort of the opposite of our general reaction to types, like horoscopes, where, I at least, think my astrological characteristics are my far the superior ones. However, when I approach it with the guidelines of The Narrative Enneagram, I find that I can look at even the dismal parts of my Enneagram type with compassion and soft eyes.

Who are you?

Once we know how we "lead" on the Enneagram, we can be aware of how we might react in times of stress or in times of rest. We can recognize our "go-to" habits and responses and make adjustments.

For instance, as a 4, I know that I will withdraw from a situation in which I don't feel appreciated.  I tend to become a little bit sullen, thinking, "I'll show them! I don't need them either." While this is embarrassing to admit, it's freeing to see myself do it and be able to stop and laugh at myself.

Enneagram is one tool in our pack as we journey to understanding of Self.
